Cantabria’s Geography

mountains-waves-2Cantabria is a mountainous and coastal region.  The coastal strip, with its abrupt cliffs and river estuaries that form a multitude of bays and beaches, immediately rises to meet the mountains.

The mountains are limestone with karst topography, where during the previous ice-ages glaciers formed deep valleys and twisting gorges. The rivers are short, fast flowing and of great eroding power, cutting curious formations in the rock and excavating some of the deepest cave systems on the planet.

Only 18 kilometers separates the beaches of the Cantabrian Sea from the highest peaks that rise up to 2,600 meters in the mountains. In between is a wide diversity of open plains, vegetation and forests.
